Black women have been gathering in circles for mutual support for centuries. This effort is the continuation of the practice of Black women liberating ourselves through sharing our experiences and aspirations.

Black Women’s Freedom Circle was conceived by Mia Birdsong and Nwamaka Agbo in November 2015. They recognized an urgent need for Black women, to have access to support and self-care that sustains our wellbeing for the long term. This is for Black women, be they cis, or genderqueer, formally or informally involved in various forms of movement work. In October 2016, Nwamaka and Mia launched the first meeting of the Bay Area BWFC. The gathering that took place in Mia’s backyard in Oakland, California was attended by over twenty women. The group has held monthly in-person gatherings since, switching to bi-weekly virtual meetups during the height of the global pandemic in 2020.

Our Mission Is To…

heal and liberate Black women. We are providing a space for Black women to breathe, reset, and reflect on what we want and desire. BWFC is a Black-only space where we embark on a journey that allows us to collectively heal from historical and lived oppression and trauma; prioritize our physical, emotional, and spiritual health, and embody liberation in our daily lives. Being in community with each other is essential to liberating ourselves in the here and now.
